Pictures and Poems
I was a writer long before I was a photographer. After years of only working in visual mediums, I began to miss words. I started adding writing back into my creative process in a number of ways—morning pages, one-line descriptions, essays, articles, and blog posts, heartfelt or descriptive Instagram captions, voice-over for videos, and poetry.
Sometimes I use my images as prompts for poetry, sometimes I use my poetry as a prompt for images. Other times, I reuse both in new combinations as mixed media projects. Often, I am drawn to the permanent—writing poetry directly on a typewriter rather than an editable format, or permanently altering negatives.
The image to the left was created by typing directly onto a 4x5 large format negative.
Here are a few other examples. An entire book of pictures and poems will be available soon.
